​Microsoft Dynamics CRM 2013 includes new Windows 8 and iPad apps that make the sales process smarter no matter where they are by delivering a seamless experience across the web and devices.

One of the questions to ask is "Why should I use this app instead of accessing CRM through a browser on the tablet device?" Although the web application is touch enabled, CRM for tablets is a touch optimized immersive experience. There are also several features that are unique to this touch optimized experience.

Although this application is initially geared towards the sales scenario, it can also be used by custom applications.

Navigation

A Navigation Bar has been customized for CRM for tablets just like the web application. When an entity is enabled for CRM for tablets and appears on the web client Navigation Bar, it will appear in CRM for tablets.

Grouping is ignored and CRM for tablets display a flattened list and will not show any repeats (which is possible in the web client). The order of the items displayed ins based on the order in the Site Map.

The Command Bar that appears in CRM for tablets is based on the same ribbon Xml as the web application. By default some command that appear in the web application will not appear in the CRM for tablets app. The command bar is context sensitive and depending on what is viewed and selected, the available commands will change.

To access the command bar in Windows 8 devices, you can swipe up from the bottom of the screen. On the iPad, a tab will appear at the bottom of the page to allow access to the command bar.

The New record button is available in the CRM for Tablets and accessible via the Dashboard area. This will display a list of entities that are enabled for CRM for tablets that also have Quick Forms.
Grids and Forms

Grids display the columns defined in the view definition which will provide a similar experience to the CRM web application. As you scroll down on the grid additional records will be retrieved from the server and a status indicator may appear to indicate that more data is being retrieved. By default 25 records are displayed. The grid columns can be resized and sorted.

The Form layout is applied from the web form. The same for definition that is used in the web application is used to determine what is displayed in the tablets app. The rendering a slightly different to optimize a touch experience.

The Relationships area of the form displays that entity relationships that are configured in the Navigation area of the form. If an entity is configured to appear in the Navigation area of the form within the form customization, and the entity is enabled for CRM for tablets, it will appear in the Relationships area.

Additional features include a customized experience for searching Lookup fields, Phone Number and Email Address clickable fields, the communication card, Next and Previous records navigation.

Some form features that are available in the CRM web application are currently not available in the CRM for tablets, which include: iFrames, Web Resources, Yammer and Activity Feeds, Bing Map integration, Sharepoint Document Libraries and the ability to switch to another form when the are multiple entities per form (CRM for tablet will always use the first form in the form order that is available based on security privileges).
Business Process Flows

Business Process Flows are available in CRM for tablets, with a few navigation differences. A flag labeled Next Stage appears on the form so that it can be tapped in order to move to the next Stage. In order to display additional commands that are related to the process, touching and holding the header of the stage will select it.

The command bar will appear with an option to move back a stage or to switch processes.

If you have a process that spans across multiple entities, and one of those entities is not available in CRM for tablets (not selected in entity settings), you will not be able to navigate to that record type.
